Characterization and Preliminary Toxicological Evaluation of Buntot-Tigre (Sanseviera oxburghiana) Alcoholic Leaf Extract

Abstract


Secondary metabolites are essential for plant defenses, which have enabled plants to survive. The leaf extracts of Buntot-tigre (Sanseviera roxburghiana) had a strong antioxidative power on DPPH and NO radicals and this could be attributed to the different phytochemical compounds present. In this study, the researchers determined phytochemicals present in the plant material and the characterization of S. roxburghiana. Results obtained from Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy analysis possible functional group present include: Alcohol, Phenol, Amine, Aromatic, Conjugated diene, Polycyclic compound. UV-VIS Spectroscopy determined the chromophore, which showed that C=N compounds may be responsible for absorption. In Acute Oral Toxicity 423 test, between the 2 doses given, only the higher dose (2000 mg/kg) showed mild toxic characteristics and identified as Category 5 based on Globally Harmonious System.
